Review: Clash in Space PAID APK by KSCT

Clash in Space is a lovingly crafted Space Invaders clone by an Italian developer. As in the original arcade game by Atari, you pilot a small spaceship, capable of flying left and right only, against waves of enemy aliens which move back and forth in a set pattern. Every time the aliens reach the edge of the screen, they move closer to you, and every time you kill an alien, the remaining ones start moving a little faster. This inevitably leads to frantically trying to predict the positions of the last remaining aliens in a hurry to avoid being destroyed when the aliens reach your ship.

You are capable of firing only one shot at a time, which will continue until either it hits an alien or the top of the screen, so if you miss, you have to wait quite some time before shooting again.

This game is based upon the original version of Space Invaders, so there are no bonus ufos flying by for extra points, no shields or bases to hide behind when the aliens start throwing a storm of fire your way, and no real variation of the game between levels, other than an increased tempo.

The game is available on Google Play for just $0.49, which I think is pretty fair, as the music is nice and the game is simple, but it does bring back the nostalgia of playing this game in the arcades when I was much younger. Thanks to KSCT you can try this game out before deciding if you want to spend money to own it.

Now I appreciate Space Invaders for being one of the first great arcade games, but by today’s standards (and even the arcade standards of the 80’s) it is way too simplistic and, frankly, boring. Space Invaders was the inspiration for many, many other games which built upon the same framework in wonderful ways, including two of the most beloved arcade hits, Galaga and Galaxian. Those games presented variations of play that kept it interesting and fun, while Clash in Space features only a repetitive contest against the same block of aliens you destroyed on the last level.

In summary, I’d get this game for the nostalgic value and callback to the days of limited computer power, when this game seemed amazing and well crafted, but I also would almost never play this game, because there isn’t all that much to it in the end. Of course, if you are the kind of player who can sit through level after repetitive level, this game certainly provides that challenge.
