Review: SimCity BuildIt - Mod by Daniel

How many of you grew up and learned about computers about the same time the original SimCity came out?

I did. And as a result SimAnything usually sounds like it’s worth a try to me. After playing the beta test for The Sims Online though, I felt pretty badly burned by the franchise, which has been pretty disappointing as of late.

You play as the mayor of a city in a relatively simplified version of the game. Unlike the original, now you will have to produce resources in order to upgrade your citizens’ houses and build more useful buildings. The factories and plants which create these resources have time locks associated with them - a basic factory, for example, can produce two steel bars every real time minute, and a hardware shop can turn two steel bars into a batch of nails for construction every five minutes. The problem, of course, is that your citizens will demand upgrades far faster than you could possibly produce the needed resources.

Here is where Daniel comes in to save the day. With the MOD Menu he added to the game, you can “freeze” your current level of Simoleons (regular currency) and SimCash (premium currency) so that any purchases you make do not deduct from your balance. This allows you to go and buy expensive resources and buildings and not have to actually grind out the currency to actually afford it. In the early game, especially, by freezing the initial 50 SimCash you receive, you can grind out all the steel, wood, and plastic you could possibly need nearly instantly. You can also absorb the cost of putting up inefficient (but non-polluting) wind turbines instead of ugly smelly (but cheap) coal plants. And you can surround your citizens’ homes with expensive parks to keep them all happy.

Without the mod, this game would surely try my patience, making me check in on the app frequently to collect resources and set up new production, but with the grindiest part of the game removed, I can design a city however I want, without worrying about how to pay for it. Some content is still time-locked - an early “quest” is to build a city hall and then collect taxes from it three times, each of with takes a real-time day, but there seems to be more than enough content to make the game enjoyable - especially if you are not dropping real cash left and right to skip the grind.
